The lighting of the first Chanukah candle in the Great Synagogue in Kishinev, Moldova, was an spectacular event.

Chanukah Menorahs have been distributed all over Moldova, where the chief rabbi is Rabbi Zalman Abelsky.

Many Jews participated in the Menorah lighting in the capital, Chisinau, where the first candle was lit.

The Chanukah party, which was hosted by the Great Synagogue – Chabad Lubavitch, Kishinev, was led by Rabbi Zalman Abelsky Chief Rabbi of Moldova.

Dozens of community dignitaries, businessmen, heads of Jewish organizations took part in: Mr. Nizhny Rozansky- Israeli consul in Moldova, Mr. Mickey Katziff – head of Joint Moldova and Mr. S. Hanocheve – Head of Caucasus Jewish community of Bukhara.

Menorah kits were distributed to participants so they could take the spirit of Chanukah home with them.

A series of visits to dozens of lonely senior women were paid, across the capital of Moldova and Chisinau. Each received their own set of Chanukah candles. The visits were coordinated by Mrs. Leah Abelsky.

The Chanukah operation was especially large this year.

Activities were operating in business centers, malls and cafes along with medical homes residential homes and prisons, and other Jewish centers.

People received a package including a menorah, candles, a Chanukah guide, along with an invitation to the synagogue.

Representatives were sent to Beltsy to put tefillin on Jews, and to demonstrate how to light the menorah.
